Are the over the counter lice products safe for you and your family?

Are the over the counter lice products safe for you and your family?

There have been a lot of questions recently as to the effectiveness and the safety of the over the counter treatments for Lice. Many of the over the counter products when used have a terrible smell or leave a strange residue on your hair even after you wash it out. Now the question is, even after going through all of this trouble is the lice actually gone? or will you have to perform this “treatment” again?

Lindane. Malathion. Permethrin

Lindane. Malathion. Permethrin are just a few of the harmful chemicals that are found in many of the over the counter lice products. Permethrin which is the main ingredient in most over the counter treatments is a neurotoxin and is listed as a “restricted use” substance by the EPA. Lindane is also lethal to cats, reptiles and fish and can be deadly to humans in high doses.

Lindane which is by prescription only has been banned around the world except in the US, the Stockholm convention is a global treaty focused on ridding the world of its deadliest toxins and has been working to phase out Lindane since 2009. Despite the regulations placed on this chemical by the EPA stating it cannot be used on cattle or crops it is still used for lice on children’s heads.

Malathion is also a very dangerous chemical and if for any reason is absorbed in to the bloodstream through the scalp there will be very dangerous side effects such as nausea, vomiting, seizures or even death.

What are nits and louse?

What are nits and louse? Is a question we often hear from our customers and we wanted to take the opportunity to shed some lights and give a better understanding on head lice and it’s different stages.

What are nits?

Nits are the small eggs produced by the live louse bugs that usually look like small brown or tan dots before they hatch. Usually lice lay their eggs close to the scalp where the live lice can be close to their food source once they hatch. Lice feed on human blood by using tiny claws to puncture the skin on the scalp.

Lice on Hair

Nits or dandruff?

Nits look very similar to dandruff however they cannot be removed by brushing or shaking them off. The lice eggs are seemly glued to the hair follicle and the lie bugs are usually attached to the scalp as well. Lice eggs tend to hatch 7-10 days after they are laid and the shell remain on the hair looking white or clear. The adult lice are no bigger than a sesame seed and the nymphs are usually a bit smaller and grow to be adult lice in about 10 days.
