My child has lice, who should I tell?

My child has lice, who should I tell?

We know it can be an overwhelming feeling to find out that your child has lice, along with the uncertainty of how to treat it or how to clean your house. Luckily, Lice Clinics of America is here to help with treatment and follow up instructions for your home. When you come into one of our clinics, you will leave lice free in about 1 hour with our painless and hassle free treatments. But after the treatment is done, who should you tell?

When your child has lice many people wonder where they got it or who gave it to them? It can be extremely difficult to ascertain who gave your child lice however you can do a few things to make sure no one else is affected by your child.

Lice is perceived as embarrassing or has negative connotations. It can be seen as a sign of uncleanness, however, this conclusion is not true. Lice is just as common as the flu or the common cold; and millions of families are affected by this every year. To help do your part to keep the lice from spreading, we would recommend that you contact all of your children’s close friends especially if they have had any sleep overs recently or borrowed any of their friends clothes.

Additionally, any sports where they might share a helmet or a hat or after school activities that might involve close contact with other children. It can be hard to make this call but think if your child’s friend had lice you would want to know so you can check your child. We recommend that you call your child’s school, family friends or anyone else that may have been in close contact with your child.

Normalizing head lice is a job that we need help with and you along with our community are key to help us out. At Lice Clinics of America we have friendly staff that is here to help you understand head lice, treat it and more importantly, not make you feel ashamed for it! If you need help contacting your child’s school or sports team, feel free to ask, we will gladly help 🙂

Home Clean Up After Lice

Home Clean Up After Lice

Home clean up after lice can be one of the most challenging and chaotic experiences. This blog will ease your mind.  We will be giving you the easiest directions to clean your home post lice infestation.

First and foremost, take a deep breath and remember that lice do not fly, swim, jump, and the lice eggs are not contagious. You can only catch bugs. Those bugs need your scalp to survive or they will die within 48 hours. So rest assured, you can lay the idea that they will “infest your furniture” to rest as they need a human host to survive.

First Things First

Before your journey deep cleaning, it is important to make sure all members of the household are screened for head lice. Make sure they are properly treated with a solution that is effective. If you do not check and treat everyone, it voids out the purpose of cleaning because the problem is not fully solved.

Time to Clean!

  • Take all of your sheets, pillowcases and towels used by the people who have been infested within the past 48 hours and wash high heat. You can put the big comforter into the dryer for 30 minutes high heat without washing it.

Heat will kill head lice

  • You can lint roll or vacuum your couch or car if it is fabric, or simply wipe it down if it is leather. We also suggest a nice solid vacuuming of the home, especially if you have little ones who like to play on the floor.
  • You can boil hair supplies or place them into a zip lock bag, then place it into the freezer overnight.
  • Throw pillows or stuffed animals used within the past 48 hours can be put in a big bag, tie the top and set aside for 48 hours.

       That’s all!

Easter Arts And Crafts

Easter Arts And Crafts

Easter Arts and Crafts is the perfect way to spend your day with the little ones this Easter. Home Depot or any of your nearby paint stores have a variety of paint chips for this particular craft. Grab as many as you like and enjoy a very fun way to decorate the house for Easter! This DIY (Do It Yourself) Paint Chip Garland is the perfect touch to create a very festive ambiance while creating memories as well. The white line in the middle of the paint chip almost mimics the look of a plastic egg!

1.) You can use the link below to print and cut out an egg template. Home Depot’s Behr paint chips have four colors per card, so you would cut them in half eliminating all white except for the line between the two color shades.

2.) Next trace the egg on the back of the card so there aren’t any residual pencil marks on the front, and then cut them out.

3.) Lastly, punch two small holes in the top of each egg with an extra small hole punch and very carefully thread them onto a piece of waxed cotton.

DIY Watercolor Wooden Eggs For Easter Basket

This is a very fun treat for your little ones and a way for them to be very creative. All you need are wooden Grimm style blocks in an egg like shape from your local arts and crafts store, watercolor and a paint brush.  Although liquid watercolors are very vibrant and bright, they are completely washable. They are also the most kid-friendly dyeing method and if you get a stain on your hands, it will wash off within 2-3 washes.

1.) Squirt some liquid watercolor into a container and provide a few eggs for your little one and enjoy watching them paint away!

2.) Once the eggs are fully painted, carefully set them on a paper towel to dry overnight.

3.) By the next day, you can set them out for an Easter egg hunt; put them in an Easter basket, or in an empty egg carton for them to enjoy playing with!

                               Let’s Enjoy Easter without Lice

Head Lice – don’t let it become a headache

Lice Can Be A Headache if you don’t know the right sources to fight it
The first thing that most of us do when we come into contact with a head lice infestation in the family is go to the corner store and buy one of the over the counter treatments that our parents used on us growing up. Or, some of us go to the blogs and see what home remedies seem to have the most success. When dealing with the “dreaded lice” it is essential to find the right solutions and weed out the myths/ ineffective treatments. A lice infestation can be very time consuming and worrisome, and an even bigger ongoing concern for parents is their children having to stay home from school, daycare and missing work.

Lice Does Not Make You Dirty
Lice are absolutely not related to your level of cleanliness. If you have been in prolonged or close contact with someone else who is infested with head lice, you can catch it. There are so many false stigmas that affect our children and families when they encounter a lice infestation, when in all actuality it really keeps us humble. This happens to the best of us, and most importantly, Lice do not discriminate at all and they are transferred by head to head contact for the most part.

When Your In Doubt.Count on US!
Our team at Lice Clinics Of America are always here and happy to walk you through all of the ups and downs with lice infestations making it simple and EASY to for you. If you are tired of the tedious time consuming over the counter treatments/home remedies- Leave it to us. While giving you a large amount of knowledge on how to properly check your children for head lice regularly, and how to avoid infestations we will provide the best care for your family.

When should you check for head lice?

When should you check for head lice?

Head lice isn’t always noticeable immediately. In fact, in most cases many people aren’t even aware that they have lice until they have had it for a couple weeks. Lice can be somewhat sneaky and hide in places you wouldn’t regularly check or might be covered, such as behind the ears or at the nape of the neck. If you are doing a check and you do find a nit or a louse don’t panic, Lice Clinics of America is here to help treat your family. Before you come to us, here are some tips as to how to check at home.

How often should I check?

If your child is around a lot of kids on a daily basis such as school or after school activates, it is recommended to check them at bath time once a week. It can be especially hard to see those tiny little eggs on the hair so we recommend that you use a nit comb. Using the comb will allow you to potentially pull out any nits or louse. We still recommend that you check your child’s hair even once they have passed grade school.

What do you do once you have found lice?

When you find head lice on you or your child, we know it can be scary but there is any easy solution to your new found problem. You have the option to take care of it yourself with products which usually entails several comb-outs throughout 10 days. You also have the option to take care of it professionally.

Lice Removal Kit by Lice Clinics of America

Lice Clinics of America offers an FDA approved heated air treatment followed by a full comb out and topical rinse application that will have your child come in with lice, and only 90 minutes later leave with clean hair. Head Lice can be such a nuisance and overwhelming. Take the easy route and visit a Lice Clinics of America location near you.

How can you check for lice?

How can you check for lice?

When your child starts scratching and tells you that their head is itchy what should you do? With the weather changing and causing dry scalp or dandruff it can be hard to determine if your child just needs some head and shoulders or if they could be dealing with something more. Lice Clinics of America can give you some great ideas as to how to check for lice.

The first way that you can check for lice would be using a lice comb and running it through the hair to see if you catch any bugs or nits in the comb. If you see any small brown bugs in the comb that could be lice. Live louse bugs usually are about the same size of an ant but they look a little bit different and are more brown or light brown in color instead of black like an ant.

Another great way you can check for lice is with sectioning the hair with a wooden pick and going through each section by hand to see if you can notice any eggs or nits. It can be hard to tell the difference between nits and dandruff which brings us to our third way of checking. Using a magnified glass can be really beneficial because the nits and dandruff will look different. Nits will have a distinct look as well as feel to them.

Lice eggs are stuck to the hair almost as if they are glued on where as dandruff with flake off of the hair strands. The eggs or nits will feel like a bubble is on the hair and even when you touch it with your finger they will remain on the hair. Hopefully these tips will help you and your family stay lice free and if you are affected by lice then Lice Clinics of America is here to help.

How is head lice spread?

How is head lice spread?

Head lice is just as common as a the flu or a cold however here are some helpful tips as to how to help prevent the spread of lice. There are some misconceptions of how lice is spread.

Lice can jump from person to person, luckily for us this is not true. Direct head to head contact is the easiest and most common way to contract lice. Simple things like sharing the same bed or sleepovers, also cuddling will allow the lice to be transmitted from one person to another.

Sharing clothing while less common is still a plausible way for you to contract head lice, clothing such as hats, headbands and ear muffs are the most dangerous since they had direct contact with the people’s head. Also items such as shirts, jackets or coats can also carry lice because as they are in contact with one’s hair. Our purpose is not to discourage your child to learn on sharing but just to be aware when this pesky buggers are around.

All grooming items such as hair brushes, combs, bobby pins are also possible means of transmission especially if there is remaining hair on any of those items. It’s important not to share these items with your friends or family in order to be sure you don’t catch lice.

Lastly, laying on certain furniture or floors that are carpeted can increase your chances of getting lice as well. If you know a person with lice has used a couch or upholstered chair be sure to vacuums it prior to sitting on it. We hope these tips are helpful and allow you to stay safe and take the necessary precautions when you become aware that someone you have been close to has lice. If you ever do end up getting lice,  don’t panic we are here to help. Give us a call and we can schedule you to come in and get treated same day .

Are the over the counter lice products safe for you and your family?

Are the over the counter lice products safe for you and your family?

There have been a lot of questions recently as to the effectiveness and the safety of the over the counter treatments for Lice. Many of the over the counter products when used have a terrible smell or leave a strange residue on your hair even after you wash it out. Now the question is, even after going through all of this trouble is the lice actually gone? or will you have to perform this “treatment” again?

Lindane. Malathion. Permethrin

Lindane. Malathion. Permethrin are just a few of the harmful chemicals that are found in many of the over the counter lice products. Permethrin which is the main ingredient in most over the counter treatments is a neurotoxin and is listed as a “restricted use” substance by the EPA. Lindane is also lethal to cats, reptiles and fish and can be deadly to humans in high doses.

Lindane which is by prescription only has been banned around the world except in the US, the Stockholm convention is a global treaty focused on ridding the world of its deadliest toxins and has been working to phase out Lindane since 2009. Despite the regulations placed on this chemical by the EPA stating it cannot be used on cattle or crops it is still used for lice on children’s heads.

Malathion is also a very dangerous chemical and if for any reason is absorbed in to the bloodstream through the scalp there will be very dangerous side effects such as nausea, vomiting, seizures or even death.

Natural Treatments

On the opposite end of the spectrum there are the all nature treatments that aren’t harmful to you however they also don’t affect the Lice in your head. If you are looking for a safe and effective Lice removal treatment, Lice Clinics of America has your solution. Lice Clinics of America is here to help when lice enters your home but you want to keep your young children safe. Our FDA  cleared medical device kills lice and its eggs with just heat, the products we use are non toxic and free of pesticides so that you and your family can leave the office lice free and chemical free.

What are nits and louse?

What are nits and louse? Is a question we often hear from our customers and we wanted to take the opportunity to shed some lights and give a better understanding on head lice and it’s different stages.

What are nits?

Nits are the small eggs produced by the live louse bugs that usually look like small brown or tan dots before they hatch. Usually lice lay their eggs close to the scalp where the live lice can be close to their food source once they hatch. Lice feed on human blood by using tiny claws to puncture the skin on the scalp.

Lice on Hair

Nits or dandruff?

Nits look very similar to dandruff however they cannot be removed by brushing or shaking them off. The lice eggs are seemly glued to the hair follicle and the lie bugs are usually attached to the scalp as well. Lice eggs tend to hatch 7-10 days after they are laid and the shell remain on the hair looking white or clear. The adult lice are no bigger than a sesame seed and the nymphs are usually a bit smaller and grow to be adult lice in about 10 days.

Although this information may sound scary but the solution is simple, with all of your Lice problems Lice clinics of America can help. We offer a variety of treatments and products to exterminate all forms of lice whether its eggs or adult Lice bugs. Lice Clinics of America is here to offer safe and friendly services in your time of need. We aim to educate and solve the Lice problem the has affected so many people and families.
